District Tournament starts Wednesday

This week's District V American Legion baseball tournament schedule is set. All games in the four-team tourney will be played at DeLutis Field in Rome with the winner earning a berth in next week's New York State championship tournament in Newburgh.

Oneida County is represented by two teams, league champion Smith Post (22-0) and league runner-up New Hartford Post (15-7). Herkimer County champion Ilion Post and Jefferson County's Sackets Harbor round out the tournament field.

Here's a look at the complete schedule for the series-style tournament:

Wednesday, July 30
Game 1A: Sackets Harbor vs. New Hartford, 4 p.m.
Game 1B: Smith vs. Ilion, 7 p.m.

Thursday, July 31
Game 2A: Sackets Harbor vs. New Hartford, 4 p.m.
Game 2B: Smith vs. Ilion, 7 p.m.

Friday, August 1
Game 3A (if necessary): Sackets Harbor vs. New Hartford, 4 p.m.
Game 3B (if necessary): Smith vs. Ilion, 7 p.m.
If Games 3A and 3B are not needed, the championship series (Game 1C) will begin Friday at 7 p.m.

Saturday, August 2
Game 1C/2C: Winner of Series A vs. Winner of Series B, 4 p.m.

Sunday, August 3
Game 2C/3C: Winner of Series A vs. Winner of Series B, 1 p.m.
Game 3C (if necessary): Winner of Series A vs. Winner of Series B, 4 p.m.

*So what do you guys think? Are we in store for a Smith-New Hartford three-game series to decide who moves on to Newburgh? Or, will Ilion and Sackets Harbor come in and make some noise? Let's hear what you think...

Smith-New Hartford all the way. Also, this is ridiculous. Whya re there only 4 teams instead of the normal 8?

legion baseball is great but its leadership has to go -- clueless as always

Definitely Smith vs. NH - the county playoffs all over again - agreed that the leadership is clueless to run a 4 team district tournament.

Thanks for your article today. I had no idea how Ilion or Sackets Harbor was so hard to predict a winner of Districts. I would not count out any team, but I think it will be Smith and New Hartford battling for the lone state spot. 9 innings changes everything though.

So much about Smith Post and how good they are! They should be! Why aren't you writing that they are an "all star" team with players from Lee Post, Oneida, etc. combined with Rome Post.

Andrew, do you know when the legion all-stars will be out?
