FINAL: New Hartford 4, Sackets Harbor 3

I'm here for the second game of the best-of-three series between New Hartford and Sackets Harbor. New Hartford leads one game to nothing.

New Hartford is putting its youngest player in the spotlight today as 15-year-old Tyler Porter gets the start on the mound. Porter played varsity as an eighth grader at West Canada Valley this past spring. It will be interesting to see how the young guy performs in today's game as a spot in the District V final is on the line.

New Hartford is without catcher Mike Doyle as he's having trouble throwing after taking a foul tip off the bicep of his throwing arm in yesterday's game. That means New Hartford will go with Tim Whalen behind the plate. Whalen, who just turned 16 last month, was the starting catcher for the New Hartford JV team this past spring. He's seen some limited playing time this year, but none as big as today.

*Today's game has a weird feel to it. It's really quiet (I feel like I'm at a golf tournament) and the crowd is pretty sparse (the 4 p.m. start time probably has a lot to do with that as many people have yet to get out of work). It definitely doesn't feel like a district tournament game. Maybe that will change as the game goes on and more people show up though (let's hope so).

andrew, now that it is official manny will not be playing for the florida marlins, any chance new hartford or smith post will be making a late playoff push with a possible acquisition?

haha I'll check with both team's coaches and see if they've made an offer. But they may be too late - check it out: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3513383

Besides the lack of fans, what's the weather like -- any rain-- looks threatening in Hew Hartford.

Got the sense this game could go either way at this point? What's your take? Has Randall gotten his troops pumped up?

Sorry about the delay. I had to take some pictures and leave the computer for a while. We're back for good now though.

As for the weather - there are some threatening clouds above, but it's only spit a little rain so far (barely anything).

This game could definitely go either way. Porter is doing a hell of a job for New Hartford - pretty impressive performance for anyone, let alone a 15-year-old legion rookie.

I think New Hartford is going to put up a couple runs in the next inning with its 3-4-5 hitters due up. Then I expect them to bring in a fresh arm to close it out.

Stay tuned...
