NEWBURGH — Smith Post will play Anaconda at 7 p.m. tonight in the American Legion New York State championship tournament at Delano-Hitch Stadium.
Anaconda remained undefeated in the tournament with a 7-5 victory over Jurek Friday night in a game that did no start until after 10 p.m. due to rain delays ealier in the day.
Smith advanced with a 9-6 win over Melvin Roads in Friday's second game. With a win today, Smith will advance to Sunday's semifinals against the winner of today's 4 p.m. game between Jurek and Newburgh at 11 a.m. Sunday.
If Smith loses, it will be eliminated from the tournament and the winner of the Jurek vs. Newburgh game will take on Anaconda in the championship round on Sunday, needing to win twice to capture the state title. The games will be played at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (if necessary).
Anaconda will play in the championship round regardless of the outcome of its game with Smith tonight. If it loses today, it will meet the winner of Sunday's 11 a.m. semifinal in a winner-take-all championship game at 2 p.m.
