Smith Post caps perfect season, etc.

Smith Post topped Sherrill Post 5-1 at Noyes Park tonight to complete the first undefeated regular season in Oneida County American Legion baseball in 17 years. The last team to do it was none other than Smith when it went 16-0 in 1991.

*Check out tomorrow's OD for Anne Delaney's story on the game.

Tonight's other games were also big match-ups and may play a key role in the outcome of the Gold Division. Utica blasted Clonan 11-0 in five innings (mercy rule) and New Hartford beat Fort Schuyler 5-3.

So what does it all mean?

Well, the Sherrill loss drops it to 9-6 (.600) and a full game back in the standings. Utica is now finished with its regular season with an 11-6 record - a winning percentage of .647. New Hartford's win puts it at 10-5 (.667) with two games remaining.

So, New Hartford is in first based on winning percentage. Utica, while no games back, trails New Hartford by .020 percentage points. Sherrill is in third.

But a lot can still happen in the way of the Gold Division's top three as New Hartford and Sherrill each have games tomorrow (New Hartford at Clonan and Sherrill finishing a previously suspended game at Helmuth-Ingalls). New Hartford and Sherrill then meet at noon on Sunday to finish a game that was suspended on Tuesday at 4-4 after eight innings. That game is at Noyes Park and may very well decide who takes the top spot in the Gold and the No. 2 overall seed in the playoffs.

Phew...got all that? What do guys you think? Who has the upper hand?

Congrats to Smith Post on going 18-0. They will be difficult to handle on the post season as well. Who can surprise them in the upcoming playoffs ? Most likely nobody but here is how the remaining 7 teams stack up in my opinion. Love Post has a good pitching staff but lacks offense. They were no hit by Fort Schuyler of all teams. Roberts is the new kid on the block and had a great start. Recent games however against better competition has shown they are competitive but not deep. Sherrill does not have enough pitching or hitting depth to do any damage. UP is young and could surprise if their pitching is solid. Their offense has been suspect all year.Adrean can hit but defense and pitching is shaky. New Hartford battles well and gave Smith its biggest test of the year. They could contend but their bats will need to do more. Whitestown rebounded very well from a poor start. They have the offense to win games but their defense is suspect and their pitching is not deep. Smith is very deep in pitching and has a rock solid defense. Although their offense has not lit up the scoreboard too many times their line up is formidable. Look for Smith to continue their winning ways and sweep through for Oneida County Champions as well as District 5 champions and represent the area in the state tournament. For the also rans MMO was in contention to win most games but never cracked the win column. Clonan just did not have enough to compete. Fort Schuyler made some modest improvement over last year but is still way too young to be any threat. Helmuth did fine and was in contention in every game. They probably would have made the playoffs if they were in the other division. Parkhurst should have won more games and made the playoffs. They may have been the biggest disappointment.
